DISCOVERING YOUR SCOTTISH ROOTS
Do you want to have your family tree traced and find out more information about the history of your ancestors? A search of the statutory birth, marriage and death certificates will be carried out at ScotlandsPeople Centre in Edinburgh in order to compile a full history of your family. Also researched will be census returns, Old Parish Registers, wills and other records, where appropriate. You may discover some skeletons in the closet that you never knew existed!
WHAT INFORMATION IS REQUIRED TO START THE RESEARCH?
All you have to provide are the birth details - name, date and place of birth - for the individual whose ancestry you wish to trace. Obviously, the more detail you aleady know about the family, the better. Even oral history can have its place and sometimes family stories can lead to a better understanding of an individual.
HOW MANY GENERATIONS CAN BE TRACED?
It is impossible to state with any certainty how far back a family can be traced, as this will depend on the surname, whether the family lived in Scotland throughout their lives, what county or parish they lived in etc. A history of several generations can generally be traced from the initial information given by a client.
HOW WILL THE FAMILY HISTORY BE PRESENTED?
The finished basic family history will contain a report for one side of the family only - ie the paternal side, or maternal side - detailing the investigation carried out, including details of the relevant births, deaths, marriages etc.
Further research can then be carried out into the other side of the family.
The presentation pack will contain all of the above, together with details of the places referred to in the investigation and details from the Statistical Accounts of Scotland (1791 and 1843-45) in order to make a fuller picture. Also included will be copies of many of the certificates referred to in the investigation. Any wills referred to will also be detailed and these can be obtained at the National Archives of Scotland at an additional cost.
CONFIDENTIALITY
All information supplied to a client will be treated with the upmost confidentiality.
WHAT IS THE TIMESCALE FOR THE RESEARCH?
It would normally take 4-6 weeks for a full family history to be researched. If any problems occur to delay this, the client will be informed immediately. (This may happen when it is neccesary to order documents etc.) If research is required urgently, this is generally possible and all such requests will be treated with a high priority.
INDIVIDUAL SEARCHES OR LOOK-UPS
If you have already searched for family members, but are looking for a copy of a certificate for a particular individual or a will or testament, this can also be arranged. Details can be supplied.
GOING FORWARDS IN TIME
If your ancestor lived in Scotland but then moved away leaving relatives behind, investigation can be carried out to find what has happened to these individuals. Perhaps you would like to contact these "lost" relatives. Details can be supplied on request.
